Fate again

14:33 Sep 21 2007
Times Read: 532

I found myself mulling over the ideas of fate and freewill. These thoughts have taken up temporary residence in my mind for the last several months. I view them more as unwelcome squatters and distractions, but I am evidently unable to evict them. So here we are again addressing once more the unanswerable questions that revolve around these two ideas.

The concept that both freewill and fate exist and intermingle at first seemed contradictory to me. As each day passes and my path rolls forward an ever stronger sense of predetermination evolves. And yet there are endless choices made, each an apparent attempt to refute fate.

Could it be that we are like divers from a high platform, or a circus performer fired from a cannon? A person’s trajectory being established from the beginning, however they still retain the ability to perform along the way. Some may choose to fly with arms pinned to their sides and legs straight back, simply trying to get to the end without injury. Others may kick and flail clumsily, not knowing what to do or why. A rare few may float gracefully, effortlessly, spinning and dancing to the amazement and envy of those that struggle.

Could this be how fate and freewill coexist?

Back again ... early morning thoughts

12:12 Sep 09 2007
Times Read: 536

Another long night, more hours spent working to the systematic humming of equipment. Generations have passed this way before, and the midnight oil has been replaced by the white glow of flourescence, but the motivations are unchanged. Product will be made, the factory will run, the business will succeed ... there is no failure, no defeat. This factory belongs to someone else, the efforts are paid for and the successes are his. The satisfaction is mine.

Dawn is about to break, and here I sit with hours of work left ahead. The coffee shop down the street will open soon. The short excursion will be enough to restart my slowing mind. How many nights such as this one has the past month contained? Or has it been two months?

The work is consuming, but this time the work is mine. I own the time, the efforts and the results. The first batch of silky gold flowed into the molds and I knew that this factory would be built and that I would build it. When construction ends and the first shippment is made I will be free.

The endless list will be done: packaging design, government liscenses, secondary suppliers, audits & inspections, equipment specifications, break even analysis, IRS form SS-4, department of revenue form 2643, EPA, USDA, FDA, accountants, lawyers ... on and on.

It will be done. When it is done then I can leave this job, this factory that is owned by another, and work in mine.
